The Beginning
What began as a safety solution to safety issues in agricultural fencing is now the hottest material for residential and commercial installations. In the early 1980s vinyl fencing was introduced at house farms as a safer alternative to wood fencing. The material allowed more "give" than traditional fences, preventing serious injuries to horses. Before long, the general public realized the incredible benefits of vinyl fences.
Product Benefits
- Durability. Strong and easy to maintain and clean. It has five times the tensile strength of wood and four times the flexibility.
- Free from traditional maintenance. No painting, rotting, rusting.
- No insect problems
- Smooth surface. No splinters, burrs, chips, or slivers.
- An attractive fence adds value to property.
- Environmentally friendly. Recyclable, non-toxic (no paints, stains, sealers, or preservatives).
- Long life. High impact rating, low shrinkage, weight tolerance tested, salt resistance, long-term life in the 'hole'.
- Return-on-investment (ROI). Initial up-front investment saves money and time later. Maintenance, repair, and replacement are virtually non-existent. Lifetime cost is cheaper than wood.
- Fence maintenance, repair and replacement can be a major (and ongoing) expense for homeowners, businesses, developments and associations. During the 1990s vinyl fencing has become an increasingly popular long-term solution to traditional wood fence problems.
Manufacturing Techniques (must know information!)
There are two basic production techniques for PVC fence material:
Mono-extruded. One solid layer of all the same ingredients. Some mono-extruded manufacturers may lower the percentage of the more expensive ingredients to save money.
Co-extruded. Created two separate layers. The inner substrate contains impact modifiers and strengthening agents and the outer layer, known as capstock, contains higher levels of titanium dioxide, which provides UV resistance. This is the more expensive process.
Both processes have the ability to create a quality product if they are done correctly.
